The US Department of Energy issues new lighting standards:
The USDOE’s new rules will effectively eliminate Halogen/Incandescent Lamps from the market by adopting two new rules for light bulbs, also known as general service lamps (GSLS).
Two New Rulings:
- Rule #1 The first rule established and eynanded the definition of GSIs to cover almost all screw based bulbs, with very few exceptions:
- The DOE also established and expanded the technical specifications of GSLs:
- Has a medium E26/E27; E17; or E11/E12 ANSI base
- Can operate at a voltage of 12V/24V, at or between 100V•130V, at or between 200V. 240V, or of 277V for integrated lamps, or is able to operate at any voltage for non-integrated lamps
- Has an initial lumen output of greater than or equal to 310 lumens (or 232 lumens for modified spectrum GSILS) less than or equal to 3,300 lumens
- Is not a light fixture
- Is not an LED downlight retrofit kit
- Is used in general lighting applications
- Rule#2 The second rule implemented a minimum efficiency standard of 45 lumens per watt (LPW) for light bulbs (often referred to as the “lighting backstop”)
- If a lamp is determined t obe a GSL, it must be 45 LPW or greater
- However, all CFL and LED lamps may continue to be sold because they exceed the minimum requirement of greater than 45 LPW.
